To the Max

I’m absolutely in love with all the maxi dresses I’ve been seeing for spring and summer. I saw this Alice + Olivia butterfly dress a while ago in an ad in Vogue, and I just found it on Pink Mascara last night for sale

It’s such a cute look, but are maxis more for evening wear than day wear? I feel that if I was to wear one during the day, I might look a bit overdressed. I’ve seen some patterns that would make really nice maxis:

Funny enough, mini dresses are in now as well. From one extreme to the other!

Why would you feel overdressed? I would wear it flat sandals. For an evening look, wear it with heels.

I guess it’s because of the length. I’m used to formal dresses being floor length, not day dresses. But hey, formal dresses for prom and whatnot are now going in a shorter direction, so maybe this is the new norm for day wear.

The short mini-dress (really tunic length if you want to be honest about it) is a fad best left to those under 20 and no shorter than mid-thigh length. You see, I’ve see the mini and maxi trends twice in my lifetime. In my 20’s (late 60″s) I wore minis for a short period of time but soon started wearing them as tops over jeans and they were very cute. In the 1970’s, I had maxi dresses and loved them. One was an empire jumper style worn with a gathered sleeve silky blouse. I wore it teaching once in a while. I still love the maxi’s as they are so flowy and feminine and for entertaining, afternoons in the park, etc. and for evenings are a stylish (not fadish) choice.

I’m barely over 20, and I don’t think I’d have the guts to wear a mini dress…way too short for my taste, plus I’d be afraid of flashing someone my underwear when I’d sit down.

My mom wore both the minis and the maxis in the late 60’s and early 70’s, and she looked great in the photos of her wearing them. I love how fashion cycles around.

I love your taste in patterns and fabric! I found you through The Big List of Sewing Blogs. I really need to make time to sew for myself – I stay busy with sewing for my family.

Congratulations on finishing your degree! It took me 6 years to finally finish mine (I had my son during my senior year.) Sometimes, I wake up from a nightmare thinking I forgot to study for final exams! I finished in 2004 and still wake up in a panic from time to time… Ha!
