Fabric Shopping in Boston: Grey’s Fabric and Notions

Grey's fabric and notions

This past weekend was the NYC sewing blogger meetup with Lauren of Lladybird and sadly, I couldn’t make it because of obligations at work.  But that didn’t stop me from doing some shopping at home!  Ana of Toil and Trouble and I hit the city in search of fabric and patterns and stopped at Grey’s Fabric and Notions in South Boston.  It was my first visit to the store and I didn’t leave empty handed, that’s for sure.

Wall o patterns

Sarah Grey, the owner, stocks pretty much every awesome indie pattern company a modern sewist could want.  I was bowled over at the selection of patterns and drooled over ones I have never seen in the “wild,” only online. I mean come on, look at that selection!  Colette, Sewaholic, Deer and Doe, Sew Liberated, Jamie Christina, By Hand London, etc.

Cotton, bamboo, modal knits

What I like about Grey’s is that the selection of fabrics and notions is geared more towards garment sewing.  Not only were there quilting cottons, but also a great selection of knits (bamboo, rayon, modal, cotton), some great blouse weight polyesters, silk dupioni, cotton lawns and voiles, and some home dec weight fabric as well.  And check out that ribbon and rick rack table!  I scored some petersham ribbon for a waistband facing, which I can’t wait to try.

Zipper wall

That zipper wall is too awesome for words.

So here’s what I got!  I couldn’t pass up the chance to buy the Elisalex Dress from By Hand London and Sureau Dress from Deer and Doe – I’ll get to use my French degree for sewing, haha!  I also found the perfect fabric for my Archer shirt for the sewalong starting on March 18, a blue voile from Art Gallery Fabrics.  And just as I was wrapping up, a funky floral Alexander Henry home dec fabric jumped out at me and seemed perfect for an a-line skirt for spring.

Grey’s Fabric and Notions is a must-visit place if you’re in the Boston area.  Sarah is nothing but welcoming and helpful – she showed Ana on-the-spot how to install a zipper for the Hollyburn skirt pattern she wanted to make and we talked about patterns we liked and sewing bloggers we follow.  Oh!  And she’s hosting Sarai Mitnick of Colette Patterns next month!  I know I’ll definitely be there for that, wearing my (hopefully finished) Jasmine Blouse and Clover Pants.

Sorry you couldn't make it to the NYC meetup, but sounds like you had an awesome time. This place looks great. Thanks for the review and gorgeous pics. I adore Boston, and don't need much of an excuse to go there. This post may just push me over the edge to make the trip.

What I love about Grey's is that Sarah was a very proficient sewing blogger before she started her store. She knows exactly what the home sewist wants to see. I hope to get to Boston one of these days to meet her and of course shop!

Wow two so for. lol. First Fabric Place and now this.
You know I used to go to Chinatown at the time when there were 4 or 5 fabric stores. And I loved them but one was my favorite that bought a lot from. Unfortunately from all of them only one is open now.
A few years ago when they closed Fabric Place stores I was so sad. Especially when I heard the story behind the store. When you mentioned Fabric Place Basement, I couldn't wait to get there, lol, and finally I did last Friday. I LOVED their laces. So beautiful.
Now, I be sure to go check this store now in the next week or so.

I'm not too involved with sewing but I stopped to take a look at your site because my mom has always been great with her seamstress skills. She used to make her own clothes while she was growing up and this reminded me of her telling me the stories. Thanks for sharing!
