Back From the Beach

The river

Welcome to Ogunquit

Ahhh the beach…I never knew how much of a beach junky I was until I moved to New England.  My family frequently went  to the beach when we lived in Florida, but I was teeny weeny at the time and only remember throwing seaweed at my dad.

It wasn’t all beach festivities during the past week in Ogunquit, Maine, there was also a lot of knitting, games, and some poking around at an antique mall.  I was inspired by Lauren of Lladybird to dig and see if I could find some vintage kniting and sewing books and patterns.

fashion knits

This looks like a book my mom has in her knitting stash from the 1970’s.  I especially love that it’s “featuring” Red Heart Yarn, a time when it was considered ok to knit a sweater out of itchy acrylic.  My favorite pattern was a “Chanel” jacket with seed stitch front band and embroidered flowers on the pockets.

sewing patterns

I found a trove of vintage sewing patterns, including the above Anne Klein ascot-fabulous blouse.  I almost bought a cute dress pattern circa 1969 with buttons up the side and a funky neckline, but decided it was too much of a hassle to size down the pattern.  Now I wish I had bought it…

Well, it’s back to reality today.  Back to work for the long haul through the crazy Christmas season…my next vacation won’t be until February.  Here’s to hoping I can squeeze in as much knitting and sewing in the coming months as possible!

Sunday Style

Mom's Skirt - 1971

I loved Zo’s idea of continuing on the Me-Made-spirit and starting a Me-Made-Living group on flickr for everyone to share their Me-Made outfits beyond the month of May.  So each Sunday (give or take), I’m going to share a pic of an outfit that I’m wearing on the weekend.

Now this skirt isn’t exactly “me-made.”  It was, in fact, made by my mom in 1971!

Mom's Skirt - 1971

My mom told me that she wore it on New Year’s Eve when she was dating my Dad.  Isn’t the fabric awesome?  It looks like there’s strips of different fabrics sewn together but it’s actually all one piece of fabric, kind of like a cheater print.  I love the length of the skirt too, but it’s a little hard to walk in since there’s no split in the side seam.  Maybe I’m supposed to wear it with heels instead of sandals.
