Packing For Vacation

vacation packing

If you’re wondering why it’s been a little quiet over here in the last week, it’s because I’ve been busy cranking out new stuff for vacation!  If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen that I finished two bikinis, a coverup, and an Elisa-lotte dress in the last two weeks.  Sewing for warm weather has definitely helped me beat the winter-blahs lately, and I think when we get back from sunny Florida, I’m going to start to sew my spring wardrobe.  I’m SO over this cold and snow, enough already!  Hand me a margarita already and I’ll be good to go.

See you next week!
(PS: I’ll be posting pool-side pics on Insta this weekend fo’ sho’)

Speedy Sewing

Test-fitting @byhandlondon Elisalex bodice #mondaynightsewing

I can’t believe that February is almost over and I have just a week to finish my sewing for our trip to Orlando!  I’m waiting on some elastic to fix the leg hole for my bikini bottoms, need to pick up some fabric for a coordinating coverup (should be super easy/fast to make), and now I’m working on my dress for our luau dinner.  Originally, I planned on using the By Hand London Georgia dress pattern.  But since I was out of commision for a week with a cold, I’ve changed my strategy and I’m now using the Elisalex bodice/Charlotte skirt combination – I don’t have a whole lot of time to fit a complete dress muslin, and I know the skirt works well for me.  So far so good – I just need to add some width the side seams of the bodice, but everything looks good and I think it’s going to turn out nicely!

Just crossing my fingers that the warm weather trend down there continues – it looked beautiful down there last week, and today was 81.  Please please please stay that way for next week!

Vacation Sewing

The snow has been getting to me this winter.  We’ve really been overdue for a winter of lots of snow, since we’ve had a some relatively mild winters in the past two years, but I keep counting down the days to spring and green grass outside.  I don’t think I really understood the point of winter vacations until I moved to New England.

So, Chris and I are headed south to Florida in a few weeks!  We’re staying at a fancy schmancy hotel in Orlando (yup, that’s it up above!) and we’re going to do nothing but lay by the pool and read all day, sip some margs, and enjoy the warm weather.  Of course, my brain immediately turned to possible sewing projects to make for our trip.

Lonsdale Dress – remember this pattern that Sue gave me last year?  I think a Lonsdale Dress will be perfect to throw on over a swimsuit or for a stroll down the Universal CityWalk.

Georgia Dress – this dress is so smoking, and I didn’t have any idea where I would wear this until we booked our trip.  On Saturday night, we’re going to a luau with Polynesian food, live Hawaiian music, and hula dancing.  How about this dress for dinner, in maybe a fun hibiscus print?

bikini

Kwik Sew Bikini and Coverup – I want to make another swimsuit this year and this Kwik Sew bikini seems like a totally accessible, easy swimsuit to sew (and fit!).  Plus, there’s a cute coverup that comes with the pattern that looks pretty quick to make (I found some Elie Tahari resort collection knit lace fabric at the store that would be perfect!!).  I love this pink and orange foliage print from The Fabric Fairy for a possible bikini.

Well, here’s to hoping that my vacation sewing plans make it feel a little bit warmer here in Boston!  Do you have any winter travel plans coming up?

Ahhh vacation…just a week ago I traveled up and down the east coast, hitting the beaches in New Hampshire and visiting my family in Pennsylvania.  It wasn’t my usual sewcation of vacations past (like here and here), but instead a relaxing time with my boyfriend and family, playing board games and tooling around town.  Plus, nothing beats my Dad’s homemade cherry pie!

How was your Fourth of July?

Out of Cape Cod Tonight

Chris took me down to the Cape this past weekend for my birthday (which is today, by the way!).  Can you believe it, he’s lived here all of his life and he’s never been to Cape Cod??  The last time I visited the Cape was on a family vacation when I was eight years old; I remember going whale watching and sitting on the boat, very cold and bored for several hours.  We had a much more fun this time – walked down the Main Street of Hyannis, ate fried clams, and looked at seashells on the beach.  No, we didn’t run into any Kennedys, but there were JFK memorials everywhere around the town.

And of course, I needed an excuse to whip up something to wear this weekend!  Since it was going to be a little on the chilly side (we ate outside and freezed our butts off when the sun went down!), I stitched up a cardi to wear a few hours before the trip.

It’s pretty much obligatory to wear Sperry Top Siders and nautical stripes when you’re down on the Cape.

I googled “free cardigan sewing patterns” and came up with this cardigan from iCandy Handmade.  It’s a dolman sleeve cardigan with hem bands at the sleeves and neck (note: there’s no grainline on the front piece (wtf), it’s advisable to add one.  I didn’t and my sleeves twist a little).  I think this took me about two hours to make, from printing out the pattern to finishing the hem.  And if I had a serger, it would look a lot more professional, especially on the inside…when there’s a breeze, it’s easy to see my raw edges inside the cardigan.  It’s not my best work, but it was quick and easy to make as well as comfy to wear.  I really need to get on the ball about making more wardrobe basics like this – they’re not as exciting to make as other garments, but I wear them a ton.

Did you have a nice weekend?  Looks like the weather is going to be great here all week!
